You then host the plugins on a program on your laptop (could be Waves multirack native, could be a DAW, I think mainstage could be tricked into doing what you need it to, could be the plugins standalone interface, could be another dedicated VST host).Įach of the above options has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice for you will depend on budget, what you need, what plugins you want to run etc. You can interface a laptop with the insert points and FX sends/returns of a desk, using a regular old USB/FW/PCI/thunderbolt/cat5 audio interface (could be built into the desk, could be a stand alone interface taking analogue signals). Soundgrid hardware can be used with other desks (x32, yammys, the bigger A&H's etc.) with soundgrid expansion cards, but the plugins need to be controlled via an external laptop running waves multirack

Soundcraft have the 'realtime rack' by UA, which goes with the VI series consoles, which is basically one of their DSP platforms with a MADI interface bolted on, the plugins are controlled by a macbook/mac + touchscreen, and can be integrated into the scene recall system on the desk.ĭigico have a tight integration with waves soundgrid, allowing you to control soundgrid servers (and I think multirack native) straight from the console Soundcraft & digico have both worked with plugin manufacturers to integrate plugin host platforms into their console workflows. Some Avid Consoles will natively run pro-tools plugins on the surface (i think its just TDM plugs, but I could be wrong) Theres a couple of ways to run plugins in the live scene, and a few caveats with each: It sounded great and was about a billion times easier than touring an actual rack of analog gear. Each gig I plugged it into the venue console via USB or Cat5, and ran a bunch of plugins live. I did my last two tours with just my laptop. The newer digital consoles can also be fitted with DANTE (my favorite) which is audio over cat5/ethernet cable, and can handle a lot of i/o. This makes it very easy to run plugins live as it takes a piece of gear out of the equation.

They have an interface built in, so you just need to plug your laptop into the console, and you've got 24 channels in and out of your laptop. The M32/X32 are actually really cool for this. Reverb/Delay plugins are also much easier to work with than compression or other plugins that you'd want to insert into the channel because the interface and plugins are going to add some latency, and unless you've got a really fancy digital console, you can't delay the rest of your inputs to match your plugin channels. This was a great introduction because it was simple.

I used Waves Multirack which is a piece of software for running multiple instances of plugins on multiple channels live, and configured 4 different reverb/delay plugins. I had a 4i/8o interface that I configured as 4 mono FX inputs and 4 stereo FX returns into the desk. I got started running plugins live by treating my laptop like a really awesome FX box.

This is usually only done on huge tours with lots of money for redundancy. From a laptop, you can remotely control the plugins, and having a network of DSP servers means that a number of the servers can fail during a show but the remaining servers pick up the slack. Basically, you've got a fancy console with a few awesome computers connected to it. The step up from running your FX on a laptop is getting a dedicated DSP server (or servers). If you're using a digital console, you'll probably want an interface that speaks MADI as that's pretty common.

If you're using an analog console, your interface needs a bunch of analog line level i/o and then you can patch the interfaces's i/o over the console's insert points or groups or however. You can bring a laptop and a means to interface your laptop into the audio. Most desks do not have the ability to run plugins natively within the console, so you need to add some form of external processing. There are engineers that tour with a thumb drive that contains the installers for all their plugins, and an iLok which authorizes the desk to use em. Some desks, most commonly the AVID SC48 and the PROFILE can run waves plugins using the processing power of the desk. There are a few ways that plugins can be deployed live.
