So imagine you have a sequencer with a sequence where you have a bassline on midi channel one and a string section on midi channel two. Now, everytime you play a note at any in-port on the patchbay this is sent to all out ports* - and then it depends on which channel it is sent on and what channel the receiving device is set to. These are matched pairwise so that you can connect midi in and out for 8 midi devices.Į.g. So simultaneously all devices connected to the four OUTs play their sequence? Then I dial in some sequences, chose their midi channel out of the standart 16 and, easy one would be 1 2 3 4 each one with a different sequence attached to it. I put IN the computer or the midipal, my two sequencer options and then I connect the four OUTs to different synths/devices. Those 8x8 options sound interesting and the prices for one of those named are 90-150€ It can take the MIDI out, and send different channels to different ports allowing it to control multiple devices without using MIDI thru connections. For example, if you are playing live without a computer, and relying on a hardware sequencer that only has a single MIDI out port. Some of the more advanced devices like the MOTU MTP can route MIDI to MIDI instead of just MIDI to computer and computer to MIDI. Another use it like I suggested above-routing MIDI from a 'master keyboard' to a module that has no built in keyboard. There are lots of other ways to the the MIDI interface, but the above is the most common. Obviously this is simplified, and usually you will spend lots of time editing and tweaking the sequence to fix errors, copy and repeat phrases and sections, and change you mind on the composition. Above you use the term sequence, but I think you are talking about tracks in the same sequence. If one synth is a module without a keyboard, I need to use the keyboard on a different synth to play it. I all my synths have keyboards, I just go from on to the next repeating the process, and as you record into each track, you should hear all the other recorded play along. When I'm done I hit stop, return the sequencer to the beginning, and hit play to hear it played back to me. There are lots of ways to do that, but the easiest is to pick a track, record enable that track, hit the record button, and play that synth. Now my setup is ready, I need to get notes into my sequencer. (Unless the device is in omni mode, which means it responds to all MIDI channels on that port indiscriminately). Anyway, on a 8x8 with 16 channels per port, that means you have the capability of having 8x16=128 tracks, but you do still need your deviceto be listening on the correct channel as well as being plugged on the correct port. Each MIDI out port is capable of sending data on 16 different channels, but each port has a different set of 16 channels. I have to assign each track both a MIDI port and a MIDI channel. This requires that the synth is multi-timbreal. In some cases I create more than one track for a single synth. Now, on my sequencer I create a track for every synth I want to use.
MULTIPLE MIDI MODULES MUST USE A MIDI PATCHBAY PC
The PC (running a sequencer) doesn't hook to the MIDI port, it hooks to the USB on the interface.
So IN1 and OUT1 on the interface run to OUT and IN on synth A, and so forth. First, almost all of my external devices have a MIDI in and a MIDI out, so I always hook up both (this is necessary for controllers such as keyboards, but useful for other things.). I don't know the specific devices/software your mentioning, but here's what I have.
